BACKGROUND:
Mimi suffered through a childhood that no one deserves. Her father was a severe alcoholic and almost killed her mother one night. After that night, Mimi’s mother left her and her brother. Two years later, unable to take the abuse anymore, Mimi left as well. She tried to take her brother with her, but he wouldn’t go. He thought that family was more important than being beaten up. Mimi had no choice, she left him there. She has no idea where her father and brother is. Every Sunday afternoon she goes to the library and tries to search on the internet, wanting to know if her brother is still alive.
She has stayed in contact with her mother who apologizes everytime she sees her for leaving so quickly and not trying to take her children with her. Mimi also stayed in contact with her father’s mother, who she is closet to out of all her family members.
Mimi’s grandmother knows how her son treats her grandchildren but can do nothing about it for she is a very old woman. She came up with the idea on how Mimi could runaway and gave Mimi her locket as a good luck charm.
After she left her father’s house, she moved to New York City, a dream come true. She had always wanted to be a dancer on broadway. As she soon as she set foot into the city she knew her dream would never become a reality. Once she realized this, she began looking for a job closest to it: a job as an exotic dancer at the Cat Scratch Club.
Once she joined the cast at the Cat Scratch, she immediatley became introduced to smack. She’s been addicted to it ever since.
After a few months on the streets she met a drag queen by the name of Angel. Angel helped Mimi get her act together and helped her find an apartment. Mimi knew Angel had AIDS and knew that you could get the disease from dirty needles, not just from sexual intercorse or blood contact. That didn’t stop Mimi from doing drugs and she soon found out that she had the disease too. Angel helped her deal with it and intoduced her to Life Support.
When Mimi danced at the Cat Scratch, she noticed a young man in the crowd. She immediatley had a crush on him, but knew she was out of his league. After coming home from work one day she saw the same man on the stairs in her apartment building; he apparently lived right above her. Mimi always heard him playing the guitar at him, and the music lulled her to sleep.
She then met a rich man named Benny and started to date him. Six months after they started going out, she found out Benny was married to a woman named Allison. She broke up with him and decided to take action on the guy upstairs.
She and Angel devised a plan and she went upstairs to ask him to light her candle. He resisted her and Mimi tried again the next night, which resulted into a big blow-up. Roger was obviously not interested in a junkie.
The next night Roger aplogized and they went on a “group date” with a bunch of his friends. They spent the night making-out in the alley out back.
During their relationship, they broke up and fought a lot. Roger had AIDS too and was a stuggling artist and an ex-junkie. Roger couldn’t take her being a junkie any longer and they broke up for good; Mimi went back to Benny although he was married.
Her best friend Angel died from AIDS that Halloween and Mimi couldn’t deal with it. Roger ran away to Sante Fe and she began to live on the streets.
Months later, Joanne and Maureen found her in the park and brought her to Roger who had returned to New York. Roger confessed that he loved her and always had and couldn’t live without her. He sang her a song he had written for her and Mimi “died”. She saw Angel near the white light and she told Mimi that it wasn’t her time; Roger needed her. Mimi woke up in Roger’s arms.
ATTITUDE:
Character's greatest fear: Dieing without saying goodbye, dieing before her friends.
How s/he feels about self: She doesn’t have much respect for her body although she does appreciate life
If granted one wish, what would it be? To be cured from AIDS
How character faces problems: Will wait things out until she gets her way.
How do they deal with death? Cry, cry, talk, cry, drugs, cry
How do they feel about and deal with being in love? Whoever she’s in love with, she wants to spend every moment of the day with them. There was a time when she was scared of love because she never really knew what love was. She sometimes doubts that people love her.

Food: huevos rancheros
Place: On the stage at the Cat Scratch or in Roger’s arms

*Writing Sample*:
His lips are all she can think about, now. Every second of the day and every day of the week, she thinks about them. His lips can’t escape her mind.
She remembers how they would crush onto hers after Roger had watched her perform at the Cat Scratch Club. His pale, pink lips felt good upon her dark skin and she couldn’t get enough of them.
Whenever his lips made contact with her body, she would moan with pleasure, never wanting them to breakaway. His kisses always made her feel safe and warm; when he kissed her with those beautiful lips, she felt loved.
Benny’s lips never had this kind of affect on her, not even once. Benny’s lips were rough and dry; when he kissed her, she wanted to get as far away from his lips as possible. His lips made her feel like the whore she was.
But Roger’s lips…Roger’s lips made her feel like she was the most perfect woman on the entire earth, just because she got to kiss his lips.
If she was going to miss anything about Roger it was going to be his lips. His hair was amazing, her hands loved to run through his long locks, and his eyes always seemed mysterious. But his lips just seemed so much better than his blonde hair or his green eyes. They always seemed to put her into a better mood, though sometimes his lips could be very cruel to her.
His lips would sometimes shout mean and hurtful things to her and call her things like slut, bimbo, and tramp.
Sometimes Mimi didn’t even notice what Roger said to her; her mind only noticing his lips moving up and down in a lovely formation.
Even when she did hear his cruel words, she let them slide. Hoping, just hoping that his lips would say, “I’m sorry,” and come bearing down on hers.
Whenever Mimi thought about his lips, she felt an unusual feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Maybe Mimi Marquez was falling in love with his lips. Or maybe, just maybe, she was falling in love with Roger Davis.
